I’ve caught up on a lot of classics this year and after reading Andy’s post I wanted to share the best films that I’ve seen for the first time. I’ve left out 2012 films (just 1 would have made the list) for when I make my Top 50 of 2012.
It’s pretty amazing I haven’t seen some of these until 2012 but better late then never! You can see my all time best list here. Would love any thoughts.
A touching movie, Crowe is fantastic. Love a good boxing film!

9. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
I really liked Raiders of the Lost Ark but this one was definitely my favourite. Loved the addition of Connery.
-
8. American History X (1998)
So intense and gripping.
-
7. Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995)
Much more enjoyable than Die Hard 2, and almost at the level of the first.
I absolutely adore the synth soundtrack. I’m in the minority who liked this more than Judgement Day.
-
5. Die Hard (1988)
A classic!
-
4. Leon: The Professional (1994)
Geez Natalie Portman was good as a child actress in this one.
-
3. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
I can’t wait to watch it again. I was mesmerised – now my favourite Kubrick film.
-
2. RoboCop (1987)
This was one of the coolest movies I have ever seen. Need to check out #2 soon.
-
1. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Wow I loved this film, my only A+ grade of the year. Pitt + Blanchett were both brilliant. I got so emotional too. My favourite Fincher film.

What are the best films you’ve seen for the first time this year?

So many great films on here Alex! Fincher is my favourite director but I’m not so keen on Benjamin Button. I’ll have to give it another go now
If 2013 is anything like the films I’ve seen in 2012 I’ll be very lucky! Fincher is my 2nd favourite director, I’m not huge on some of his more popular films though (Fight Club). Not sure why I loved BB so much, especially as I hate long films. Thanks for stopping by!
Die Hard with a Vengeance is hilarious, definitely my second favourite after the first! The Last Crusade may be my favourite Indiana Jones film, just because of Sean Connery
I just watched American History X for the first time this year too! Intense hardly describes it! Nice list!
Glad I’m not on my own with The Last Crusade, Sean Connery was so awesome in it.
Yeah American History X was more than just intense hey… wow!
Awesome list! Benjamin Button is such a magical movie, it really should get more love from people.
Thanks sati! I know most people don’t have it anywhere near there favourite Fincher film but I’m happy to hold the Benjamin Button flag high!
Cool idea for a list, Alex! I may have to do something similar at TWS. That’s an awesome batch of movies you selected, and I am very pleased to see RoboCop ranked so high! That’s one of my favorite movies, and I was lucky enough to finally see it on the big screen over the summer.
Here’s to an even better 2013!
Cheers man, you definitely should. Slightly envious that you got to see RoboCop on a big screen, would be an awesome experience!
Many bloggers are doing this right now and I love it!
So great you got to see Benjamin Button, it’s terrific – I haven’t seen any of the others on the list except Die Hard (a true classic indeed).
My favourite first-time watch this year would be Fight Club. By far. I still can’t really believe how awesome it is.
I need to give Fight Club another watch, I watched it for the first time last year but didn’t love it.
I really have to watch Benjamin Button don’t I?
Yes definitely! Seen the other 9?
Great flicks right there. Eyes Wide Shut… yes! And I LOVE Die Hard With a Vengeance. Perfect action movie.
Nearly everyone I talk to say they were so disappointed it was Kubrick’s last film, I loved it so much! Assume it will only go up more on repeat viewings.
