Inspired by Sam and Chris over at An Online Universe, I thought it would be a good discussion generator to highlight some films loved by many but that I just didn’t enjoy or love with the same passion. I think my list may raise some eyebrows and would love to hear why you loved a film on my list or if anyone actually agrees with me!
I was a bit scared to post this but remember it’s just my opinion! I actually wish I had enjoyed some of these more. So here we go…
Life of Pi (C+)

It looked beautiful, but I just found the story lacking overall, especially the final 20 minutes which completely lost me. I have hardly heard a bad word about it and it is a hard film to hate, but I certainly feel I’m on my own in not really enjoying it.
-
Killer Joe (B-)

I actually had a good enough time with this one in a packed enthusiastic cinema, but upon reflection I thought it was pretty overrated and not a film I liked.
-
The Master (C+)

One I certainly feel on my own about, I truly appreciated the first half before being bored brainless by the second half. Long movies aren’t my thing but I just found this one to drag on forever. The acting was superb though. I know a few didn’t love it, but most seem to adore it, sadly I don’t feel the love!
-
Amour (C+)

I must have no heart as I did not feel a thing in this long, tiresome film. While others were left feeling depressed about the cold, dark message in the film, I was left depressed that I had to wait for the predictable ending for over an hour. I have never seen a Haneke film and have no intention of catching up on them at this point.
-
Compliance (C)

While I know it’s based on true events, I simply was frustrated the whole time at how unbelievable it was. I guess the aim is to be frustrated and shocked at how unfathomable the premise is, but I was just frustrated and annoyed by the movie.
-
Your Sister’s Sister (C)

I don’t think I like Mark Duplass. I found this movie to be rather boring with the whole film taking place in basically the one location of the house. Another one I’m in a clear minority for!
-
This is 40 (C)

I’m still shocked this is 70% on RottenTomatoes. This film is my type of humour and it had moments of enjoyment. However it drags on forever and ever and ever… I don’t think Mann/Rudd worked well as leads and I was desperately waiting for it to finish!
-
Holy Motors (C)

Movies don’t get praise from me for not making any sense. I was annoyed by what I found to be a pretentious piece of film making. Sadly, I loved two scenes (The accordion scene and The closing scene) which saved the film from complete hate from me. I’m glad people could find something to enjoy from this one, I certainly couldn’t.
-
Margaret (C)

Put simply, boring and long. I have not seen the extended cut (the shorter version was long enough for me!) but Anna Paquin‘s character drove me insane, I had no sympathy for her at all and kept wishing she would go away and stop ruining the bus driver’s life. I know many didn’t like this either but I feel enough people did for me to include it in this list.
-
Seeing a Friend for the End of the World (D+)

Another film that some didn’t like, I’ve seen it on enough best of lists for me to include it as well! I hated Keira Knightley with a passion in this, I felt no chemistry between her and Carrell and I nearly walked out. Alas, I suffered through to the end of a film that isn’t sure what it is as it’s not very funny and I felt no emotion at all. This and Margaret are probably the two films I passionately disliked this year!

So there you have it! Did anyone like ALL 10 of these films? Don’t rip into me too hard please

Oh, sorry you didn’t enjoy Killer Joe more! I haven’t seen Life of Pi but it doesn’t look like my kind of movie at all, so I doubt I’ll enjoy it.
Killer Joe was the best from this list at least
I didn’t get much out of Life of Pi or Seeking a Friend either. Loved The Master, though. That’s probably still my favorite this year.
Good to hear at least we agreed on a couple
I can at least understand The Master love as it had me under it’s spell early on.
[...] Film is art, and as such it is subjective. That is what makes it so wonderful! It’s not possible to like everything, and sometimes it’s hard to explain why. It can be really baffling when you don’t like a film that everyone else seems to love. Alex Thomas has listed 10 films loved by others, but not by him. [...]
I haven’t seen any of these, so sadly I’m not able to judge… but I want to see Life of Pi at least.
