Movie Review – Pitch Perfect (2012)

Pitch Perfect is easily one of the comedies of the year, with charismatic characters combining with great humour to create a music movie that is fun, energetic and mesmerising. The songs should appeal to all demographics, but especially younger audiences (15-30).

Anna Kendrick plays Becca, a freshman at Barden University who is convinced into joining The Bellas, an all-girls singing group lead by Chloe (Brittany Snow) and Aubrey (Anna Camp). Kendrick is fantastic, giving a real natural feel to the character, and the cast of the whole movie is superb too, each providing unique traits that bring something to the table. It’s Aussie Rebel Wilson who steals the show though, with her hilarious antics, a lot of which Wilson brings to the film on her own accord.

When it comes to the musical aspect of the film, there are frequent acapella’s throughout and it’s almost a musical. That being said, I was never into musical films, however Pitch Perfect has definitely bucked the trend. I found the songs to be catchy, interesting and even mesmerising at times and it’s definitely my taste in music. Furthermore, the songs aren’t pointless, they actually add to the story too.

The humour in this film is often witty, with use of some occasionally lame puns, but they work well and keep the tone of the film light. Each character has a trait that brings humour and it’s definitely a team effort to bring the laughs. Wilson also brings some “Aussie only” jokes which surprised me, with references that would only be understood by us Australians. I thought this was great that she got to bring some of her personal brand to the movie.

To top all the fun off, there’s also a rather decent plot to be had here, with a worthy build up to the end of year Acapella finals. I even felt some emotion towards the end and seemed to care about the characters.

Overall, Pitch Perfect is a super entertaining experience, that left me in a great mood – both times I saw it. It’s rich with humour and has singing that is unique and modern. I highly recommend you seek it out and hopefully it leaves you feeling as happy as I did! A-

It plays around with its premise and idea in a goofy and fun way, but never fully comes around and takes us by surprise. Still, you’ll have a good time regardless. Nice review Alex.

I think that’s a fair summary, although it has it’s moments of surprise, they just aren’t that suspenseful. Such a good time!

  3. I didn’t like this as much as you, but it wasn’t as bad as what I thought it was going to be. Nice review :D
