Dredd 3D was everything an action fan could ask for, filled with gory, brutal violence that keeps you entertained the whole time, and an awesome soundtrack to match.

Set in futuristic city Mega-CityOne, police have the authority to both decide a culprit’s guilt and execute their punishment. Based on the 1977 comic strip Judge Dredd, Karl Urban plays the lead character (Judge Dredd) and director Pete Travis has ensured it largely sticks to the original comic, which will please fans.
Judge Dredd and his rookie Judge, Anderson (Olivia Thrilby) make a routine stop at a reported crime scene, a 200-story slum in the heart of the city. From here the film really gets it’s legs as we see the two fight for their lives as they look for Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), the owner of the building. While this does have many similarities to the Indonesian film, The Raid, it is completely different, especially when it comes to the sci-fi premise itself.
The action is brilliant, although some may find it a bit too hard-hitting and brutal. It’s fast, exciting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The 3D is also quite decent, with the film being shot with 3D cameras often. Another impressive camera technique are the extreme slow-mo’s, made plausible by the added intrigue of the ‘Slow-Mo’ drug which has just been discovered, making the brain think time is moving at 1% of it’s normal speed.

Urban is cool as Dredd, a man who never takes his helmet off and is direct when he speaks. Some of the lines in the movie are a bit cliche, but they are executed purposefully, even perhaps with tongue in cheek. The star performer is certainly Thrilby though, who adds a real human feel to her character, one that is not perfect in a world where perfect standards are expected for Judge’s.

A highlight for me was the soundtrack and sound effects used throughout, gripping you and setting the feel for key scenes. Combined with the action and camera shots, it feels like you are in the movie at times.
While I have highly praised the film overall, it does have minor flaws and won’t appeal to everyone. I believe anyone who wants a good action film will be more then satisfied, with the exciting world created also appealing to sci-fi fans. I really hope there is a sequel as I would watch it in an instant! B+

Great review! I didn’t plan to see this but I read a lot of positives reviews so I’m gonna give it a shot!
Good review Alex. The style was pretty cool to watch, but I wish there was more action for me to chew on. I would like to say that I want to see a sequel for this, but since it blew it so much in America, I highly doubt that will ever see the light of day.
The R rating really hurt it in America. Hopefully it can make some decent $ internationally, a very unique style for sure. Thanks for stopping by Dan!
I had no intention of seeing this, but it has gotten such good reviews, I most definitely will once it hits dvd.
