Movie Review – Looper (2012)

Looper is a fascinating look into the future and concept of time travel which while exciting and cool, is slightly let down by some slow scenes and failure to explore concepts in depth. Still, it is worth it for the entertainment value overall, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis pairing up to good effect.

Director Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) takes Sci-Fi premises made famous by movies like Terminator and brings his own unique spin to them. The idea of a ‘Looper’ is an interesting an exciting one, with the logic that when the mob wants to get rid of someone they send them back to the past, where hired gun’s kill them, thus taking away all traces that they existed in the present. It’s a complex theory which makes more sense in the movie then it does when trying to explain.  Read more

Movie Review – Arbitrage (2012)

With an outstanding performance from Richard Gere, Arbitrage waits just long enough to take you from intrigued to enthralled. While I wouldn’t say it thrilled me, I was definitely immersed in the story, with numerous twists around every corner.

Troubled hedge fund tycoon Robert Miller (Gere) is desperately trying to complete the sale of his trading empire and move out of the business for good. We see early on he’s a busy man, with not just many things on his mind, but many people too. He has a great family with wife Ellen (Susan Sarandon) and children, including his daughter Brooke (Brit Marling). Both actresses are great alongside Gere and it certainly feels like they were made for the role.  Read more

The Weekly Watch: Installment #26

A week/fortnight full of nearly all older movies, with the only new release being The Watch.

I caught two classics in The Exorcist and Psycho, finally watched Terminator 1 + 2, as well as catching up on Die Hard 2. Throw in Clerks and Cinderella Man and it’s a rather decent bunch of movies!

The Exorcist (1973) – Somehow only the 2nd William Friedkin film I’d seen (the other being Killer Joe) it was a classic and one with many memorably scary scenes. A game changer for the horror genre, I was certainly entertained and some of the scenes were simply freakish. I didn’t quite love it but definitely appreciated it. B+

With no upcoming movies in Australia I’m keen to review, I thought I’d look back at the first 8 months of the year and my favourite movies and performances I’ve seen so far. This was inspired by Alex at And So It Begins

I’ve seen 75 movies this year that I’m classifying as 2012 releases, and I would expect I’d see another 75 or so before the year is out. I’m really excited for Looper and Killing Me Softly amongst others.

10. The Avengers
9. The Dictator
8. Prometheus
7. 21 Jump Street

The Weekly Watch: Installment #25

A semi-busy movie week as I checked out 5 2012 movies, The first Expendables and a highly rated film in Heat.

Of the 2012 releases, two were documentaries in Indie Game: The Movie and Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey. I also caught up on The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as well as seeing Expendables 2. Finally, I reviewed Aussie film Kath & Kimderella. Read on for my thoughts on each.

The Expendables (2010) – As I had heard some good things about Expendables 2, I decided it was a good idea to catch the first. It was quite average, with some cool action scenes but no plot and ultimately boring me towards the final third. A great cast though and it had it’s moments. C+  Read more
