Movie Review – Kath & Kimderella (2012)

The lovable ladies from Fountain Lake are back and on the big screen for the first time, as they go on an overseas trip to Italy. Fans of the popular Aussie show will love seeing them back and they provide a lot of laughter on their whirlwind adventure.

Kath (Jane Turner) and Kim (Gina Riley) have gone the extra mile in this movie, moving away from a quiet suburb in Victoria, Australia and venturing into a holiday on the other side of the world. The whole cast is back with Sharon (Magda Szubanski), Kel (Glenn Robbins) and Brett (Peter Rowsthorn) all playing their parts in this Aussie comedy. It’s the three female leads that depart for Italy and while not bringing anything hugely new, they are all great as the characters we know and love from the show.  Read more

The Weekly Watch: Installment #24

Now that the Melbourne Film Festival is over (you can read my wrap up here) I’ve had some time to catch up on my huge watchlist. I ticked off 4 classics in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Rear Window, The Graduate and Vertigo. I loved 3 of them and enjoyed Vertigo but not as much as the others.

I also managed to see one new Australian release in Hope Springs with Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep which exceeded my expectations. Read on for mini reviews!

2001: A Space Odysessy (1968) – Visually stunning, it had me gripped almost the whole way. It’s definitely revolutionary with it’s ideas, such as AI having a mind of their own and I found myself really rooting for Dave. The final 10-15 minutes lost me a little, which was a shame. The soundtrack was also way ahead of it’s time – epic indeed! A-  Read more

Melbourne International Film Festival Round Up

I saw 20 films at my first ever film festival and it was a really great experience with a wide range of movies. I saw most of what I wanted to see, with Undefeated and The Intouchables being the main ones that I missed out on. I had 5 films I loved and 4 I thoroughly enjoyed so to come away with 9 films I can’t wait to talk about has been great.

I’ve gone and ordered all 20 films with a brief summary of my feelings for each below. Would love to hear which ones you enjoyed or are looking forward to!

Loved:

#1 – Moonrise Kingdom
I reviewed this film and it was my clear favourite of the festival. So charming and likeable, full of laughs and beautifully shot. A-

#2 – Safety Not Guaranteed

This fun movie had a lot of charismatic characters and was really
just a superb mix of humour, intrigue and a good plot. Only 86 minutes long, it felt like a perfect length and had me interested the whole way. B+

#3 – Bully

An amazingly moving documentary, it was hard to fight the tears back for this
one. The multiple stories work well and I really felt the pain of each character. It’s message is a strong one and while I do think US kids will relate to the movie moreso then Australian ones, it’s still a world issue that needs to be addressed. B+

The Weekly Watch: Installment #23

While I’ve been busy with the Melbourne Film Festival (of which I have seen 11 films so far) I will do a full breakdown of that after the festival finishes.

Over the last week (or two) I managed to see a few new releases in Bernie, The Campaign and Cosmopolis. I also watched a classic for the first time in Die Hard.

Cosmopolis (2012) –  Robert Pattinson is probably the highlight of this very unique and futuristic film that is very hard to get into. It won’t appeal to many and sadly while I enjoyed the concept and some aspects of it, it was ultimately slow and a very ‘talky’ movie. I’m not sure which demographic would enjoy this film, but I guess if you’ve seen Director David Croenberg’s work before and liked it I would give it a shot. Read more

Movie Review – The Campaign (2012)

The Campaign starts like a bullet with consistent laughs and great characters, especially Zach Galifianakis, but is let down by it’s final third which simply runs out of steam. It’s a movie that provides a lot of laughter throughout though, with the mixture of Galifiankis and Will Ferell a good one.

The battle between long term congressman Cam Brady (Ferrell) and newcomer Marty Huggins (Galifiankis) is an entertaining one, with both bringing some hilarious character traits to the film. Their constant rivalry is a highlight, each trying to get a leg up on each other, often in hilarious ways. The humour itself is both slapstick at times and witty at others. Some slow motion action shots are definitely winners as they are used in much cleverer ways than your usual slapstick comedy.  Read more

Movie Review – The Sessions (2012)

The Sessions was a moving experience about a disabled man who wishes to lose his virginity with an outstanding performance from John Hawkes as Mark O’Brien. It captivated the audience the whole time, a true story that is sure to linger in your thoughts long after the movie ends.

-
Directed by Ben Lewin, the story was inspired by an article from Mark O’Brien about his struggles and triumphs as a man with an Iron Lung and his wish to have sex for the first time. We meet his professional sex surrgotate Cheryl (Helen Hunt) and their journey to ultimately achieving his lifelong wish.  Read more

Movie Review – Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Moonrise Kingdom was one of the most charming movies I have ever seen, with stunning visuals and adorable performances all round. It is definitely one of 2012′s best, with the world that Director Wes Anderson takes you being full of imaginiation and humour.

Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, the plot focuses on two twelve year olds who fall in love. The acting performances of all the kids in this movie is just so brilliant and mature, with the script feeling more like adults are acting rather then the kids themselves. Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward) are both very likable characters and without such great performances the movie wouldn’t be the same.  Read more
