Bernie is a movie that not only exceeds expectations with it’s laughter and entertainment, it provides a great crime story with a brilliant performance from Jack Black. To top it off, it’s based on a true story.

In the small town of Carthage, Texas, we meet Bernie Tiede (Jack Black) who is an assistant funeral director and one of the town’s most loved residents. We are told the story of Bernie, how he can do no wrong and is always there to lend a hand. We also meet Marjorie Nugent, who unlike Bernie, is not pleasant at all and quite nasty. Played by Shirley MacLaine, Marjorie is someone we can relate to in real life but to the extreme. A polar opposite to accomodating Bernie.
First off, Jack Black is brilliant. It’s a role I’ve never seen from him before; calm, believable, pleasant and quite likable. He really sets the scene for a character that we quickly grow to become accustomed to. It’s interesting how we feel for him as the movie goes on and without giving too much away, the ultimate dilemma that faces both the audience and the characters in the movie.

The humour in the movie is somewhat dark. It touches on some elements that may offend or upset some, particularly one scene where I was shocked at how far they went. I did however love it and was trying to control my laughter, especially at a character in the background of the scene. It was brilliant and definitely one of my most hilarious moments of the year. The scene is very memorable and if you’ve scene the film I’m sure you will agree at how much it stands out.
Not only was Jack Black great, but Marjorie was also well played by Shirlaine, a character that was so anti-social and rude it would have been a tough job to play. Many have also raved about Matthew McConaughey who plays District Attorney Danny Buck. While he’s not a huge character, he adds to the film’s charm.

I will say, I had no idea if it was a real documentary or not until the end and my subsequent findings after the movie. The behaviour of some of those interviewed seemed so real but I kept telling myself that they were just actors. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending and it really hits you – mind blowing almost.
Bernie is simply a great film. It’s not revolutionary but it’s so warm and heartfelt and some of the humour was perfect for my taste. With three great acting performances, especially Black’s, I highly recommend you give this one a watch! B+

Awesome review! I don’t like Jack Black much but it sounds like an interesting movie. I’ll definetly try to see it.
