Movie Review – The Dictator (2012)

Sacha Baron Cohen‘s latest installment in The Dictator is as rude, sexist and offensive as ever before and it had me laughing the whole way through. Cohen’s role as General Aladeen is played to perfection as we watch the North African dictator risk his life to ensure that democracy never exists in his country.

After the successful Borat and not so successful Bruno, Cohen knows how to offend everyone and he doesn’t let up here. Some of the humour seems like it is taken too far but it’s the extremeness of it all that is just hilarious and works perfectly. Numerous times I was laughing when I was trying not to! Dictator Aladeen pokes fun at all races, cultures, genders (well, mainly females) and any demographic imaginable as he travels to the USA to defend his country against the UN.

The humour in this movie is not just ‘shocking’ but instead has the perfect mixture of clever and witty jokes as well. I’m sure many flew right over my head as there were numerous little things I picked up throughout that had me laughing a lot. The movie also features Ben Kinglsey, John C Reilly and Anna Faris amongst others, who add to the film with thier cameo performances – but it’s really Cohen who steals the show, and puts in a performance just as good as his in Borat.

Speaking of Borat, I know many will draw comparisons to that and ask was the Dictator as good? To which I will say it probably wasn’t, but that’s likely due to the fact that Borat was revolutionary and it’s hard to compare it the Dictator to what will probably be Cohen’s funniest movie.

The Dictator has a nice little love story amongst the laughs, and also takes a big swipe at America and it’s governance however the thing it does best is make you laugh. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and if you are easily offended this is definitely not the movie for you.

Off the top of my head I can remember a good 3-4 key scenes which I absolutely loved, and even though it has a few misses, the laughs quickly come back whenever there is a slight dry spell. If you liked Borat, I can’t see you not loving The Dictator – a hilariously offensive effort from Cohen! B+

I am glad that people are liking this, because I want SBC to still have the ease to make the films he wants, but yeah, I just wasn’t feeling this one. One to the next one!

Found this extremely funny, would rate this better than Bruno and on par with Borat. My only critique was that it was too short!
