Movie Review – Romantics Anonymous (2011)

Romantics Anonymous is a sweet, charming story from France about two emotional chocolate lovers and a blossoming romance. It’s characters are cute, plot is light and most importantly it made me laugh and left me feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

We meet Angélique (Isabelle Carré) who is a very pretty and uncontrollably shy chocolate maker and enthusiast. She is also very talented but prefers to keep inside her shell. When she goes for a job at a struggling chocolate company owned by Jean-René (Benoît Poelvoorde), we quickly see that his emotions are also very extreme in that he’s highly nervous and shy around women, or even people in general.

Very early in the piece he tells us about his father’s favourite saying, a very negative one in that, “Lets hope nothing happens to us”. Buoyed with this slogan growing up, Jean-René is afraid of most things and likes to play it safe with no risks.

The film opens with a lot of laughs and they continue throughout. Whether they be from the awkward chemistry between the two (including some very funny scenes, primarily the first dinner date) or at Angélique’s “Emotional Anonymous” classes in which other emotional people share their stories. It was really hard not to laugh at the lengths some of the characters go to to justify their behaviour and had me continuously laughing throughout.

Angélique’s character in particular is adorable and her shyness is hard not to like. While both characters have very extreme emotions I found them relatable in a lot of ways at a much lower level.

The movie is very light hearted, and Director Jean-Pierre Améris does a good job to keep us laughing but also get us close to crying, but not quite there. I think with such a warm movie it was hard to go one way or the other, with a scene towards the end playing with our emotions very quickly, perhaps not entirely how it was visioned.

I found Romantics Anonymous to be charming nevertheless, and it left me feeling warm inside. It is very light hearted and while some may not like such a positive movie I found it very hard to dislike. The chemistry between the two is just so cute and the humour is great. The more I think about it the more I liked it! B+
