The Weekly Watch: Installment #8

Taking a look at the movies I’ve watched over the last 7 days and I must admit they are very diverse this week! Just looking at the pictures below we see a classic alien movie, a classic thriller, a movie based on Mars, a massive house party and a great crime/action movie. Also add in Scott Pilgrim vs The World which I rewatched this week and is so different too!

I watched 3 new release movies this week, the much maligned Project X, the critic splitting John Carter and a movie most wouldn’t have heard of from Norway in Headhunters. I finally managed to watch The Silence of The Lambs in full as well as kicking off the Alien Quadrilogy with the first movie, Alien.

Project X (2012)- Ahhh a movie about a massive house party. This movie has had some horrible things said about it with hundreds of negative reviews. But if you didn’t like the trailer and still saw it then you only have yourself to blame as it’s very similar to that. Three unpopular kids have a massive party in an attempt to be socially accepted and to get laid. It’s a bit of fun and definitely aimed at the younger demographic, and males too. Luckily I fit this category and I quite enjoyed it even though it was slow at times. A good movie to see with mates and not take seriously. C+

John Carter (2012) – This movie has to be seen, simply so you can decide which side of the fence you sit on. Taylor Kitsch plays John Carter, who is transported to Mars and has to make his way and survive in a strange world. I loved seeing Bryan Cranston, Mark Strong and Don Stark (Bob from That 70′s Show) and the 132 minute run time actually goes pretty fast! It was quite enjoyable with the best part of the whole movie probably being the ending too. Watch for the cute little dog monster thing. B-

Headhunters (2012) <<< Click here for my review of this great Norweigan action crime movie. B+

The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - While I’m pretty sure I’ve seen parts of this growing up, I sat down and watched the whole thing and was not dissapointed. This is a classic film starring a brilliant Anthony Hopkins as manipulative serial killer Hannibal Lecter. Jodie Foster is an FBI agent who’s trying to get his co-operation to find another serial killer on the loose. It is very well made and I’m dying to see the prequels and sequels now! A-

Alien (1979) -  After watching the Prometheus trailer countless times, I finally decided to sit down and watch the first of the Alien quadrilogy and I must say I was impressed. I can see why Ridley Scott is held in such high regard as this movie was great and brilliantly directed. I’m also amazed at how real the images were considering it was 1979! Keen to see the next installment, Aliens. A-

Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010) -
I sat down to watch this with some mates and while it wasn’t as good the second time round it was still a great movie and extremely unique. The visual effects are great and it also boasts a cast that I quietly am in love with including Michael Cera, Anna Kendrick and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Lovers of video games will really like this movie too. Ahhh the nostalgia!

That was my week of movies! C+, B- and a B+ for 3 new Australian releases was a good week, as well as two more A grade movies in The Silence of The Lambs and Alien. As for this week, I can’t wait to see 21 Jump Street on Thursday!

What’s your letter grade for Scott Pilgrim, pretty spot on about Project X, good installment!

I originally gave it an A- so will stick with that but it was probably a B+ the second time around. Enjoyed Project X then James? I know lots actually did!

Glad you were fair on Project X, a movie that never pretends to be more than it is. Not THAT bad, you know?
