The Weekly Watch: Installment #10

I had a quiet one this week only watching 3 movies, 2 of which I reviewed in The Hunger Games and The Raid. I also watched The Shining, a classic horror film from 1980.

Movie Review – The Hunger Games (2012)

The Hunger Games was one of the most hyped up movies of early 2012, with massive countdowns leading up to it, midnight screenings and rave reviews. Coming into it I was pretty excited to watch it, with a plot consisting of 24 young boys and girls battling it out to be the lone survivor, a somewhat dark storyline, especially as it was only rated PG13 worldwide (M in Australia).

We meet Katniss Everdeen (Brilliantly played by Jennifer Lawrence) who is quite the skilled bowman and part of District 12, one of the 12 districts participating in these ‘Hunger Games’. The Hunger Games itself are filmed and shown live across the region and are looked upon as a tribute to the lost lives of the past.

Movie Review – The Raid (2012)

The Raid is one of the most brutal, intense films I have ever had the privilege to see. It’s full of violence, crazy fighting, knives, guns and non stop action. If it didn’t have a storyline it wouldn’t matter, but it has a decent one of those as well!

-
The carnage begins almost straight away but we first meet Rama (Iko Uwais), a rookie agent in a SWAT team headed by sergeant Jaka (Joe Taslim). He tells his pregnant wife and unborn child to wait for him to return from his mission. The mission is to infiltrate ruthless ruler Tama’s (Ray Sahetaby) 30 storey building and put a stop to his is army of killers and thugs.  Read more

The Weekly Watch: Installment #9

Another variety blockbuster week. I looked at new releases in Australia of Coriolanus and 21 Jump Street. I also managed to watch the romantic and emotional movie Like Crazy which is in Australian theaters still.

After watching Alien last week I watched Aliens this week too which was also great. Finally, I rewatched one of my 10 A+ movies in Superbad, a classic! Read on and give me your thoughts at the end too!

Movie Review – 21 Jump Street (2012)

If I had to sum up 21 Jump Street in one word it would be ‘hilarious’. We know how funny Jonah Hill is, but the combination of him and ladies man Channing Tatum works a real treat in this action comedy flick that was based on the hit TV show of the same name.
-
-
The movie begins with a nerdy looking Jonah Hill as a try hard Eminem and Channing Tatum as one of the cool kids who sadly wasn’t very bright. Already the hilarity starts as Hill’s character bring a few laughs and we quickly learn that they weren’t the best of friends in high school.

The Weekly Watch: Installment #8

Taking a look at the movies I’ve watched over the last 7 days and I must admit they are very diverse this week! Just looking at the pictures below we see a classic alien movie, a classic thriller, a movie based on Mars, a massive house party and a great crime/action movie. Also add in Scott Pilgrim vs The World which I rewatched this week and is so different too!

I watched 3 new release movies this week, the much maligned Project X, the critic splitting John Carter and a movie most wouldn’t have heard of from Norway in Headhunters. I finally managed to watch The Silence of The Lambs in full as well as kicking off the Alien Quadrilogy with the first movie, Alien.

Movie Review – Headhunters (2012)

Headhunters is yet another foreign film that shows how it should be done, with suspense, cleverness and action as key components of this thriller that has you on the edge of your seat.
-
 -
Set in Norway, we meet the main character Roger Brown (Askel Hennie, above) early on in the piece as he is interviewing potential candidates to take over the role of CEO of ‘Pathfinder’. While we are led to believe he is purely a headhunter, we soon find out that this is not the case, as he has other methods to supplement his rich lifestyle with his wife Diana (Synnove Macody Lund).

What’s Coming Up in March?

Taking a look at what new release movies are coming up in Australia this month. I’ve picked 5 movies to look out for over the next few weeks, a couple I am very excited about!
-
-
This Thursday (March 8 ) we see the release of John Carter, Disneys very expensive and highly talked about movie about John Carter of Earth. The initial reviews I’ve read aren’t that great but it will be one that has to be seen and judged for yourself. 132 minutes is very long though so I’m hoping it’s ok!

Also released is 50/50 which I would reccomend everyone sees if you get a chance as I had it at #23 in my Top 50 of 2011.

The Weekly Watch: Installment #7

Another week down, another 5 movies watched. This week I took a look at 4 new Australian releases in My Week with Marilyn, A Separation, Killer Elite, and Carnage and all with differing opinions. I also knocked a movie of my large watchlist in the 2006 movie The Illusionist, which was added to the very rare ‘A’ grade ratings section.

My Week with Marilyn (2011) –
A movie I was not expecting much from, it told a fantastic story about Colin Carter, a young man with a love for film, and his week working on the set with Marilyn Monroe. It tells a much greater story then that, and Michelle Williams captures Monroe brilliantly. I was very pleasantly surprised to see Emma Watson pop onto the screen, in what was not just a tiny role. The first hour had me enthralled, the final third did not as much, however it was still great and one I’m sure many will love. B-  Read more
