With the Oscars just around the corner (Feb 26th) what are the chances of some surprises? You can view my updated Oscar Predictions but I thought I’d take a look at the Betfair odds to see how it’s shaping up.

Best Picture:
The Artist - $1.12
The Descendants – $27
Hugo – $40
The Help – $44
The Tree of Life – $100
War Horse – $110
Moneyball – $120
E.L.I.C – $140
Midnight in Paris – $150
When it comes to the Best Picture race, it is clearly over with The Artist going to win. Sorry to those who are hoping for an alternative choice because it simply won’t happen.
Best Director:
Michel Hazanavicius – $1.21
Martin Scorcese – $7.20
Alexander Payne – $15
Woody Allen – $50
Terrence Malick – $60
Exactly the same as the Best Picture category, The Artist will take this almost 100%. I would be shocked if Scorcese came away with this but there is still a tiny chance he might.
Best Actor:
Jean Dujardin – $1.90
George Clooney – $2.20
Brad Pitt – $40
Gary Oldman – $75
Demian Bachir – $85
Finally an interesting category, this is neck and neck between Dujardin and Clooney and either winnng will not be a surprise. Dujardin has finally overtaken Clooney in the odds but only marginally, and no matter who wins on the night, neither will be an upset. I think this will be the most interesting award of the night.
Best Actress:
Viola Davis – $1.80
Merly Streep – $2.28
Michelle Williams – $32
Glenn Close – $150
Rooney Mara – $160
Another exciting category, Davis is slightly favourite but definitely not guaranteed of winning this. As much as I love Mara, anyone who thinks she has a chance is crazy. It really is amazing how clear cut a lot of the awards are going to be but at least we won’t know who wins this for the night.
Best Supporting Actor:
Christopher Plummer – $1.05
Max von Sydow – $28
Kenneth Bragh – $46
Nick Nolte – $50
Jonah Hill – $120
Wow, Plummer is absolutely guaranteed to win this!!! He simply can’t lose. Which is a shame as I loved Nick Nolte’s performance.
Best Supporting Actress:
Octavia Spencer – $1.08
Berenice Bejo – $17.50
Jessica Chastain -$36
Melissa Mccarthy – $60
Janet Mcteer – $80
Octavia can’t lose this. Or can she? I honestly think Berenice Bejo has a chance at this for her peformance in The Artist, and $17.50 odds are crazy. I must be wrong though because these things usually don’t lie.
What are your thoughts on any possible upsets?
Clooney vs Dujardin?
Davis vs Streep?

I think what you have bolded here is what we’re going to see, with Dujardin and Davis nabbing their categories. No surprises to be had this year. But, of course, I surely hope I’m wrong.
I’ve never followed the Oscars as closely as this year, I hope it’s not this black and white every year!
It has been recently. There are usually SOME awards that are close calls. I think Best Actress is the closest this year, but we’l see.
There’s always room for surprises, but I think after the crazy, unorthodox stretch the Academy went on (American Beauty, Million Dollar Baby, Crash, The Departed, No Country, Slumdog, Hurt Locker – all very unorthodox Best Picture winners) they are settling back into familiar, boring territory.
