Top 50 of 2011 – #20-11

Entering the top 20, some of these movies I’ve watched more then once now and still love them as much the 2nd time round. You can find 50-21 with these links;
#50-41  #40-31  #30-21   Here’s 20 to 11.

#20 – The Help

Another Oscar nominated movie, this movie has some fantastic acting including Oscar nominated performances from Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain. Emma Stone plays an aspiring author during the civil rights movement in the 1960s, writing a book on the African-American maids dealings with their white families they work for. The best thing about this movie was the acting and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

#19 – Fast Five

For some reason I wasn’t expecting too much from this movie, and while I’d seen the first three in the series I missed the fourth and forgot how good they were. The fifth installation was great and while it’s better if you’ve seen at least a few of the series I didn’t feel it was compulsory. There is less driving in this and more action which doesn’t bother me as I never watched them for the cars. It always kept me on the ball and never bored me, definitely one action flick I’d reccomend.

#18 – Hanna

For those that have seen Atonement, Saoirse Ronan is now grown up (well, 17) and plays the lead role in this action mystery thriller of Hanna. Also starring Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett, this movie is described as ‘A 16-year-old who was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin is dispatched on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives.’ Super flick.

#17 – The Thing

Probably a surprise to most at #17 in my countdown, The Thing is a prequel of the 1982 horror of the same name. While it didn’t seem to be universally liked, I absolutely loved this film and more importantly the ending. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead (known to me from Scott Pilgrim vs the World) and Joel Edgerton, The Thing follows a discovery of an alien craft at an Antarctica research site. While I’ve only seen bits of the original, I’m not sure if people felt this remake didn’t deliver based on that or they simply didn’t like it. Go and see it and let me know if I’m the only one who loved it!

#16 – The Ides of March

Ryan Gosling enters my countdown for the second time and this time George Clooney joins him in this political ‘thriller’. While I’m not much of a politics person, this was great and it was great to see the ‘dirty tactics’ employed. The cast also boasts Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei and Jeffrey Wright who all seem to pop up in other movies in my countdown as well. Some find this movie slow, so if that scares you off maybe give it a pass.

#15 – Attack the Block

Another bunch of UK kids feature in my Top 50 but this time they are a little rougher then the Inbetweener boys. This is a comedy movie but it’s also a SciFi/Horror and while I laughed a lot I think the best part of this movie is the continuous action. Very simple plot in this one, a teen gang in South London are defending their block from an alien invasion. Nick Frost is the only real name in the movie and he is funny yet again.

#14 – Paul

Ok, a bit strange but at #14 comes yet another alien movie (the third out of the last four!). Nick Frost, who was just in #15 above which was also about aliens (he must have ‘aliens’ as a prerequisite for any movie he’s in!) teams up with Simon Pegg and Seth Rogen (Paul) in this movie about two comic book geeks travelling around U.S. Once they encounter Paul outside Area 51 the action and hilarity ensues. Those who love Arrested Development will also enjoy Jeffrey Tambor and Jason Bateman who are great in this too.

I wish I could promise this will be the last Alien movie in the countdown, but I’m afraid I can’t!

#13 – Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Technically made in 2010, this wasn’t released to a wider audience until 2011 and even then most wouldn’t have seen it. This Comedy/Horror is extremely unique and hilarious. Tucker and Dale are on vacation when they are attacked by a group of college kids who have got the wrong idea about them. It’s funnier then it sounds!

#12 – Super 8

Until I made this countdown, I never realised how many supernatural movies I enjoyed this year. Super 8 is probably the best of them and follows a group of friends witnessing a train crash and the following unexplained events that pursue. While most of the main actors are kids, Noah Emmerich also features, one Actor who seems to be in a lot of movies I loved this year.

#11 – The Artist

The favourite for the Best Picture at the Oscar’s, The Artist has taken the world by storm this year and cleaned up nearly every major award there is. I was luckily enough to see it right before the beginning of this countdown and it does not dissapoint. Firstly, this movie is in black and white. Secondly it’s silent. If this hasn’t scared you off then you must see this film, which was brilliantly done. Featuring some american actors in John Goodman and James Cromwell, the stars of the movie are both french; Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo and they are breathtaking. The music is also great, but the best thing about this movie for me was the dog – definitely an Oscar worthy performance!

That’s it for today, personally I’m amazed at four movies about aliens, but that’s how it turned out! Tomorrow the Top 10 starts, 10 movies you must see from 2011! As always, comments are more then welcome :)

I have noticed a supernatural trend in your countdown, now I know what sort of movies drive you.

@Justin – Yep, who would have thought we would have such a similar taste when it comes to supernatural movies!

It’s refreshing to see a top list that isn’t just focused on the quality of the films, but how much enjoyment you found out of them. I really enjoy Super 8 too, but when the Alien needs that specific locket to get into space, that slayed me. Why couldn’t it find a spare stop sign? Thanks for the list. Looking forward to the top 10.

Man, one of the few films I hated more then The Help was Fast Five. Ha, no matter, still digging this list!
