Top 50 of 2011 – The Prelude

Michael Fassbender in Shame - A movie I won't be able to see before the top 50 is released

The top 50 is just days away and I have almost watched all the movies I’ve wanted to from 2011. Sadly there will be a few I just won’t be able to watch in time (mainly due to the fact they haven’t been released yet in Aus!) so I thought I’d take a quick look at which movies won’t be featuring and why!

Movies on my watchlist that I haven’t been able to see:
Shame, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Carnage, Take Shelter, My Week with Marilyn, A Separation, The Artist*

*The Artist is released in Australia on Feb 2 and I already know of an advanced screening on Jan 29. I may leave a spot open in my top 30 on the assumption that this highly rated movie will make it. Update: Have booked a ticket for the 27th Jan! :D

It’s a Shame about Shame, however I’m not too fussed with most of them as it’s out of my control. Martha Marcy May Marlene is released on Feb 2 here so I’ll be very keen on seeing that as well.

Movies I’m regarding as 2010: 127 Hours, Black Swan, The Fighter

While they were all released in Australia in 2011, I’m considering these as 2010 movies so they won’t be in the countdown. Just for those wondering, as they were all great movies!

Documentaries: Senna

I haven’t seen many documentaries this year, in fact Senna was the only one, however it won’t be in the Top 50 as I’m trying to steer clear of mixing the two. Senna was great though and a must see. I would probably put it ~10-15th if it was to be included.

The Others: ???

While a Top 50 is already quite a big list, there’s many films I’ve watched this year that were great in some ways but just not good enough overall. Wednesday I’ll be doing a quick blog post summing up each in as few words as possible, before the real stuff starts on Friday!

If you’ve seen any of the movies on my watchlist, let me know what you thought about them and if I’m really missing out that much.
