The end of the countdown is finally here!!! Thanks for making it this far, the following 5 movies are my best of the year.

#5 – Source Code

An action thriller centred on a soldier (Jake Gyllenhaal) who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he’s on a mission to find a bomber of a Chicago train. Without giving too much away, this movie was great in setting up an idea that while pretty unrealistic, seemed plausible, or at least a fantasy I was keen to believe throughout the whole thing. There’s also some light relief from Russell Peters and I love these kind of movies that leave you thinking about it after. Don’t watch the trailer, go straight to the movie! Read more

The Top 10 is here!!! These are movies I really enjoyed from 2011, that I’ll hopefully look back on in the future and still adore. I loved these so much I’ve split them into two, here’s the first five.

#10 – Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

While this Drama/Mystery film is a bit complex, it is filled with intrigue and a wonderful cast who together with the great storyline make this a fantastic movie. Gary Oldman plays George Smiley, who is forced out of semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within M16′s ranks. The editing and score for this film is also a big part of why I rated it in the top 10, and it also features actors Tom Hardy, Mark Strong and Colin Firth amongst others. It’s not an action film if that’s what your after but it builds up very nicely for a great end.

#9 – Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Tom Cruise is back for the fourth installment of Mission Impossible and it is arguably the best one yet! Read more

#20 – The Help

Another Oscar nominated movie, this movie has some fantastic acting including Oscar nominated performances from Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain. Emma Stone plays an aspiring author during the civil rights movement in the 1960s, writing a book on the African-American maids dealings with their white families they work for. The best thing about this movie was the acting and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

#19 – Fast Five

For some reason I wasn’t expecting too much from this movie, and while I’d seen the first three in the series I missed the fourth and forgot how good they were. The fifth installation was great and while it’s better if you’ve seen at least a few of the series I didn’t feel it was compulsory. There is less driving in this and more action which doesn’t bother me as I never watched them for the cars. It always kept me on the ball and never bored me, definitely one action flick I’d reccomend.

#30 – Bridesmaids

The comedy many have labeled the female version of The Hangover, Bridesmaids is basically an all female cast but they show they can match it with the guys. I quite liked it and even though I’m not so sure I’d give it a rewatch, it should appeal to all audiences, especially females.  Read more

#40 – Sherlock Holmes – A Game of Shadows

While I wasn’t too excited to see this, it pleasantly surprised me. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law have a great chemistry, and there’s enough action to entertain. I had not seen the first film so that was not an issue and it also had some great humour at times.

Critically acclaimed Hugo comes in at #39 on my countdown. This film has already won a huge amount of awards including Best Director for Martin Scorcese. Set in 1930′s Paris, Read more

The Top 50 is finally here! Without further ado here’s the first installment, with my 50th to 41st favourite movies of 2011.

#50 – Real Steel

Real Steel is a feel good movie that I enjoyed due to it’s relatively simple plot and acting by Hugh Jackman and Evangeline Lilly. There’s some cool action scenes and the robots themselves look pretty good and realistic. While it had some flaws it just sneaks into 50th spot and with a 7.3 score on IMDB it had a pretty good reception. One for all ages but definitely one the kids will like. Read more

It’s nearly time for my Top 50 (Friday), and with only two movies left that I can watch (The Artist and J Edgar) it’s time to cull those that didn’t make it. Assuming The Artist makes my Top 50 (which I am) there is still a big battle for 50th that I’m struggling to decide on! So in no particular order here are some movies that won’t be making The Top 50 but still worth a mention for one reason or another. Listed alphabetically;

Hangover Part II - Had it’s moments. Original much better.

In Time – Fantastic concept. Average Execution.

Johnny English Reborn – Funny, relatively enjoyable. Just misses out.
